Romans

INTRODUCTION:

The book of Romans was written around 57 AD by the Apostle Paul. It was most likely written in the city of Corinth and was, in effect, Paul’s way of introducing himself and instructing the believers in the Roman church. Paul had hoped to go to Rome, but had been turned away (Romans 15:19-32; Acts 19:21) and thus decided to write this letter since it was unclear to him if he would ever make it to the great city.

Today as in Paul’s day Rome is a great city. In Paul’s world Rome was the hub and center for activity in the world’s largest (at the time) empire. For many Romans the city of Rome was beloved, beautiful and magnificent. Songs, poems and books were written in honor of this great city. However, Rome’s glory was shrouded in the dense and sprawling slums in and around the city.

This book is in many ways, Paul’s magnum opus. Though it is not a complete compilation of Paul’s theology, it is arguably his most clear and exhaustive of all his letters. Paul’s posture is one of intellectual rhetoric which is fitting for such a large city containing some of the most educated people on the planet at the time.

This sermon series takes place from October 9th 2011 – June 2012.
